When it comes to richness and affluence, Enugu state is not only known for her excess deposit of coal and other natural minerals. We have a lot of productivity going on in Enugu and being home to a large Igbo population, Enugu prides herself in also housing some rich local governments. Here are some of the richest local governments in Enugu state that in turn generate income for the country.
IGBO ETITI LOCAL GOVERNMENT:
Also known as one of the richest local governments in Enugu, Igbo Etiti is home to a lot of hardworking citizens. Ogbede serves as the local government’s administrative center. The primary occupation for the people here is farming. They mainly cultivate yams, cassava, kola nuts, and coco yams in abundance. They also do wood works, hand works and tap palm wine.
ENUGU LOCAL GOVERNMENT:
This is both the state capital and one of the richest local governments of Enugu state. It is home to a number of manufacturing firms including: Anammco, Juhel Nigeria Ltd, Nigeria Breweries etc. It also houses Enugu Museum, golf course, and Opi Lake Complex which has seven interconnected lakes and is great for tourists to visit.
NSUKKA LOCAL GOVERNMENT:
The indigenous towns of Edem, Opi, Ede-Oballa and Obimo all border around Nsukka being one of the richest and well-to-do local governments of Enugu state. This local government is home to the esteemed University of Nigeria, which remains one of the oldest and best universities in Nigeria till date. Citizens of this local government are involved in trade, manufacturing, and food processing.
OJI RIVER LOCAL GOVERNMENT:
Oji River Local Government borders Anambra and Abia state to the south. Oji River is where it has its headquarters is made up of the following towns – Inyi, Achi Ag, Achil, Awlaw, Akpugoeze, Oji River Urban and Ugwuoba. This local government also has:
- Oldest and largest leprosy rehabilitation centre in the South East.
- Oji River police services
- Oji River Thermal Plant
- Coal Mining
AWGU LOCAL GOVERNMENT:
This local government like every other local governments in Enugu state is pretty important. It is located in the Enugu West senatorial zone. A lot of communities are located there. We have: Awgu, Agbudu, Amoli etc. This local government area harbors the NYSC Enugu orientation camp. Residents engage in crop and livestock farming. They also engage in palm wine tapping as well.
IGBO EZE NORTH LOCAL GOVERNMENT:
Benue and Kogi state are bordered by Igbo Eze North local government. The two towns that make up Igbo Eze North are: Etteh and Enugu-Ezike. In this local government, you can find several markets like: Eke Ozzi, Afor, Erie-Umuozzi etc. The citizens are usually farmers, craftsmen, and hunters.
NKANU EAST LOCAL GOVERNMENT:
The Nkanu East borders Ebonyi state to the East. The headquarters is located in Amagunze town. This local government is well known for: tapping palms for wine known as Akwuru Akpawfu, production of various kinds of palm products, subsistence farming, Omaba masquerade etc.
UDENU LOCAL GOVERNMENT:
Udenu local government has its headquarters in Obollo-Afor town on the A3 Highway. The local government is known for its mixed cropping farming style and also its agricultural activities.
UDI LOCAL GOVERNMENT:
This local government has a hilly topography. Udi is also known for its hills and the Awhum waterfalls. Its headquarters is located in the beautiful town of Udi.
EZEAGU LOCAL GOVERNMENT:
This local government is known as one of the richest local governments in Enugu State. It has its headquarters located in Aguobu-Owa town. It is known for palm oil production and also farming.
Enugu state engages in a wide array of economic boosting activities which all of these local governments produce in one way or the other. So,it is safe to say that Enugu state boosts the country’s GDP with revenues from these activities.
