Check Out The 17 Local Government Areas In Enugu state

Enugu State is not only blessed with a host of natural resources, but also a vast area of land. There are 17 local government areas in Enugu State, including:

1. Aninri

Enugu state in the Southeast geopolitical region of Nigeria is made up of seventeen local government areas, including Aninri. Aninri, which has its headquarters in the town of Ndeaboh, boasts a number of cities and towns, including Oduma, Nenwe, Ndeaboh, Mpu, and Okpanku.

Igbo and English are two of the most common languages used in Aninri. The most widely followed religion is Christianity, with traditional religions having a far smaller following. The New Yam festival, which takes place yearly in the Aninri LGA, is one of many festivities that are held there.

Aninri, which means “the land of food,” has a long history of agriculture. The bulk of the locals work in agriculture, cultivating significant amounts of crops like yam, cassava, melon, cocoyam, pumpkins, and oil palm.

2. Awgu

Awgu local government area is found in Enugu state.  Agbogugu, Isu awa, Mmaku, Obeagu, Mgbidi, Nkwe, and Mgbowo are among the towns and villages that make up the region, which has its administrative center in the town of Awgu. Udi, Nkanu, and Oji LGAs in Enugu State and Isochi LGA in Abia State share borders with Awgu LGA. The Igbo ethnic group resides in the region, and both the Igbo and English languages are widely used there. While both traditional religion and Christianity are practiced widely in Awgu LGA, the Egbeleli of Awgu is the area’s traditional monarch.

3. Enugu East

Enugu East is another local government area in Enugu state. Enugu East LGA is made up of a number of cities and villages, including as Ogwogo, Utazi, Nike, Amokpo, Ibeagwa, Obinagu, Emene, and Amankpa.

The NewYam festival is a well-known celebration hosted in Enugu East LGA, and Caritas University and Godfrey Okoye University are important local monuments.

4. Enugu North

Enugu North local government area is situated in Enugu state. Enugu Town serves as the area’s administrative center, and it includes streets and neighborhoods such New Haven, Upper Chime, Nanka, the Fire Department, Ogui Junction, and Okpara Avenue.

With a total area of 106 square kilometers and an average temperature of 27 degrees Celsius, Enugu North LGA is located. The Enugu North LGA has a thriving economy, and the neighborhood is home to a number of public and commercial organizations, including hotels, banks, hangout areas, and restaurants. A multitude of boutiques, shopping centers including the well-known Polo Park Mall, and markets like the Artisan Market are also located in the region.

5. Ezeagu

Ezeagu local government area is found in Enugu state, its administrative center in Aguobu-owa. The Udi, Uzo uwani, Oji River, and Awka North LGAs all border the Ezeagu LGA. Ezeagu LGA is made up of a number of towns and villages, such as Amansi-odo, Umumba-Ndiagu, Neke, Obunofia-Ndiuno, Aguobu-owa, Agba-umana, and Amakwo-oghe.

The Mmanwu and Odo festivals are two of the vibrant celebrations conducted in the Ezeagu LGA. Notable local features include the Okpoku waterfall Omughu and the Ezeagu tourist complex.

6. Igbo Etiti

Igbo Etiti local government area is in Enugu state. The local government area (LGA) is made up of a number of towns and villages, including Ikolo, Onyohor, Ukehe, Udueme, Aku, Ekwegbe, Ohemje, Diogbe, and Umunko. The LGA’s administrative center is located in the town of Ogbede.

Igbo Etiti LGA covers a total area of 325 square kilometres. Farming is a significant economic activity in the Igbo Etiti LGA, where crops including yam, cassava, kolanut, and cocoyam are produced in significant amounts. The LGA is home to a number of marketplaces where a range of goods are purchased and sold, contributing to the region’s booming trade. In the Igbo Etiti LGA, woodworking, craftsmanship, and the production of palm wine are other significant economic activities.

7. Igbo Eze North

Igbo Eze North local government area is in Enugu state, Southeast geopolitical division of Nigeria. A portion of the states of Kogi and Benue border the LGA. The Igbo eze LGA, which includes the cities and villages of Mberubu, Agbogazi, Obolo-eke, Ogungu, Adani, Ake-eze, Mbalaze, Mgbowo, and Ogumte, has its administrative center in Enugu-Ezike.

The Orie Umu Ozzi market, the Afor market in Obollo, and other markets are located in the LGA, which also has a thriving commercial industry. Hunting and handicraft are two other significant economic activity in the Igbo eze north LGA.

8. Igbo Eze South

Igbo Eze South is another local government area in Enugu state of Nigeria. Igbo eze south  local government area includes the towns and villages of Unadu, Uhunowerre, Iheakpu-Awka, Oroko-ulo, Ovoko agu Iheaka, Itchi, Eror Agu, and Ibagwa-aka as well as the LGA’s administrative center.

The Igbo language is widely spoken there, and Christianity is the most popular religion there. Egab-eze and the New Yam festivals are two well-known celebrations held in Igbo Eze South LGA.

9. Enugu South

Enugu South consists of several districts and streets which include Awkananaw, Achara layout, Agbani road, Ozalla, Uwani, Meniru, Ugwuaji, and Maryland. Enugu South LGA covers a total area of 67 square kilometres

Huge coal resources can be found in Enugu South LGA. Maize, yams, and cassava are just a few of the crops that are grown in the region. The Kenyatta market and the Mayor market are just two of the markets found in Enugu South LGA.

10. Isi Uzo

The Enugu East, Udeenu, and Nsukka LGAs, as well as a portion of the states of Benue and Ebony, all border the Isi uzo LGA. The LGA is made up of a variety of towns and villages, including Neke, Mbu, Umualor, Eha Amufu, Ikem, Odomogwo, Orokoro, Umuero, and Mbu Amom, and has its headquarters in the town of Ikem.

Onwa-asaa and Oruruesh festivals are popular celebrations in the isi uzo LGA, and the Federal College of Education Eha Amufu is a famous landmark there. Residents of the Isi uzo LGA work primarily in agriculture, cultivating significant amounts of crops like yam, cassava, maize, and cocoyam. The Nkwo Neke market, where a variety of goods are bought and sold, is one of the marketplaces in the Isi uzo LGA where trade is also thriving. Hunting, palm wine tapping, and woodworking are some other significant economic activities carried out by the residents of Isi uzo LGA.

11. Nkanu East

 Nkanu East local government area is domiciled in Enugu state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Parts of the Ebonyi state border the Nkanu East LGA. The LGA is made up of a number of towns and villages, including Ihuokpara, Mburubu, Oruku, Ugbakwa, Nkerefi, Akpawfu, Amaechi Idodo, Ubahu, and Owoh. The LGA’s administrative center is located in the town of Amagunze.

The Eze Agabi of the Ihuokpara kingdom is a prominent traditional ruler in the Nkanu East LGA. Notable festivals hosted in the LGA include the Ani onwa ano and Oruku festivals.

12.  Nkanu West

Nkanu South is another local government area in Enugu state which possesses its corporate headquarters at Agbani. Nkanu west LGA is composed of the cities and villages of Akpugo, Akegbe Ugwu, Ozalla, Umueze, Amuri, Obuoffia, Obe, and Amodu. The New Yam festival is a popular celebration observed in Nkanu west LGA, and the Enugu State University of Science and Technology and the ESUT Law School are notable local landmarks.

Another significant geological feature in the region is the Ani Ozalla lake. Numerous hotels, banks, factories, and both publicly and privately owned organizations are located in Nkanu West LGA. The LGA is well known for growing a variety of crops, including oil palm, cassava, yams, and cocoyams. Since the LGA is home to various markets where a range of goods are bought and sold, trade is also thriving there.

13. Nsukka

Nsukka is one of the seventeen local government areas that make up Enugu state, South-east Nigeria.Nkpunanor, Ihen’owerre, Nru Nsukka, Nguru, Lejja, Opi, Orba, and Eha -Alumona are among the towns and communities that make up Nsukka LGA.  The Onwa Ito and Omabe masquerade festivals are well-known events hosted in Nsukka LGA.

Numerous hotels, banks, businesses, and governmental organizations are located in Nsukka LGA. The LGA is also a center for agriculture, with crops including cocoyam, cassava, yellow pepper, and bambara nuts being farmed there. As a result of the presence of numerous markets where a range of goods are bought and sold, trade is also thriving in the Nsukka LGA.

14. Oji River

Oji River is also another local government area in Enugu state. Akugoeze, Ugwuoba, Achi, Inyi, Awlaw, Umuokpara, Obune, and Amankpunator are just a few of the cities and communities that make up Oji River LGA, which is bordered by portions of the states of Anambra and Abia.

The Oji River LGA hosts a number of vibrant festivals, like the Isiogba Festival, while the Oji River Thermal Power Plant and Oji River Police College are prominent local landmarks.

The Oji River LGA’s economy depends heavily on trade, and it has markets like the Oji River Urban Market where a range of goods and services are traded. Crops like yam, cassava, cocoyam, and okro are cultivated in the Oji River LGA, which makes farming a significant component of the local economy. The Oji River LGA also contains a number of other minerals, including coal and clay.

15. Udenu

Udenu is another local government area among one of the seventeen LGAs that make up Enugu state. The towns and villages that make up Udenu LGA include Amalla, Obollo-Afor, Iheakpu, Isi-enu, Ajorogwu, Udunedem, Orba, and Umu Egali. The Onwa-Ebo and Akatakpa festivals are significant celebrations celebrated in Udenu LGA.

16. Udi

Udi is one of the seventeen local government area that make up Enugu state. Udi LGA is made up of a variety of towns and villages, including Inewe, Eke, Umunchi, Okpewe, Amaji, Ufiala, Obinagu, and Agbudu.

The high-quality palm wine produced in the Udi LGA, known locally as “Uneke Achime,” is well known. Many locals participate in palm wine tapping. The LGA is home to a number of markets, including the Orie Agu and the 9th Mile Modern Market, where a range of goods are bought and sold. Farming and crafting are two more significant economic activities in the Udi LGA.

17. Uzo Uwanni

Uzo Uwanni is another local government area in Enugu state. The LGA’s administrative center is located at Umulokpa, and it includes a number of towns and villages, including Nimbo, Abbi, Ugbenu, Nkpologu, Uvuru, Nrobo, Adani, Akpogu, and Ukpata.

Uzo-uwani LGA occupies a total area of 855 square kilometers, the local government area host a number of rivers and streams as well as several hills. The average wind speed in Uzo-uwani LGA is put at 10 km/h. The Eke Akiyi and Adani rice markets, which draw hundreds of buyers and sellers, are only two of the marketplaces that the Uzo-uwani LGA hosts. The Uzo-Uwani LGA’s economy heavily relies on agriculture, which produces products like yam, cassava, coco yam, maize, and vegetables. The residents of Uzo-uwani LGA also work at livestock husbandry, palm wine tapping, and hunting.
